Intuitive Eating (A non-diet approach, Part 2)

In my post dated 12-09-08, I introduced many of you to the concept of a non-diet approach to weight and nutrition management, by way of something called "Intuitive Eating", a seemingly revolutionary take on nutrition counseling instituted by Registered Dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch.

 

Today, let's continue our look at this important topic of discussion and hear directly from Elyse Resch, as she explains the concept first hand...

In Memoriam - Erin Bjorklund (1987- 2008)

Please allow me to return next time to our discussion of Intuitive eating and the non-diet approach...

Today, it is with great regret that I write about the loss of Erin Bjorklund, a young, vibrant woman, whose life ended too soon.

She is, unfortunately and tragically, among the many lives that was not spared the destruction and devastaion of an eating disorder.

As 2008 nears its end, it is my wish that next year, we will see the end of the epidemic of eating disorders.

My sincere wishes to all of you for a Holiday Season and New Year filled with health and well-being.

A Non-Diet Approach

How many of our clients believe that the "right" way to eat involves deprivation and food restriction? How many of them think that denying their bodies what they'd "really like to eat" is a sign of "good health"? How many divide foods into "good" foods and "bad" foods, or confess that if they ate any "junk food" on a given day that they were "bad" that day for doing so?

For that matter, how many of our friends and family members approach food in this manner? For how many of us does this describe our own relationship with food?

The diet-mentality is a ubiquitous concept in our Western culture; scarcely anyone these days has not been on a diet at one time or another, even when that diet was medically unnecessary. Restricting food is commonplace, whether for weeks, days, or even one meal at-a-time.

But what if there was another way?

What if many of the people who routinely deprive themselves of wanted calories, sometimes only to binge on them later, could eat what they wanted, when they were hungry for it, and stop when they were full? Is such an approach to food actually possible? And is it healthy?
