Instead of the War on Obesity, there IS a new peace movement.

Michelle Lelwica makes many wonderful points in this article and I thank her profusely for posting it.

In addition, I must clarify a significant error, although most people probably would not know it was an error. In the third paragraph, Michelle said: "Beyond institutions, ordinary folks from all walks of life concur that weight-loss is a cause worth fighting for. Indeed, the necessity of downsizing our bodies may be the one thing upon which a nation that is otherwise deeply divided can readily agree."

NOT TRUE. There is a large body of evidence that weight loss is NOT a cause worth fighting for. That, indeed, we should end the war on obesity and launch a campaign for healthy living for all sizes. A focus on health at every size is just such a peace movement ... and it is growing daily.

Please read the Health At Every Size Manifesto and note the science behind this movement: http://www.lindabacon.org/HAESbook/HAES_manifesto.pdf

We promote healthy living choices INDEPENDENT OF WEIGHT.
We acknowledge that over 90% of all weight loss is temporary, leading to weight cycling which has terrible health consequences (Indeed, weight cycling results in most of the same health problems usually blamed on obesity!)

There are many, many books written on this subject. http://www.plussizeyellowpages.com/Books.htm

I think your readers will enjoy broadening their awareness of this new peace movement because it fits together with so much of what Michelle Lelwica has written here. Again thank you for posting this article. I look forward to future writings as our culture digests the concept of ending the war on obesity and launching a campaign for healthy living for ALL sizes!
