Weigh-In Wednesday
I recently began receiving “Weigh-In Wednesday” inspirational emails from the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee (EDCT) (www.edct.net). I love these messages so much that I wanted to share one with you.
A message from Shelli Yoder, Executive Director of the EDCT:
My three year old daughter loves Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. I'm intrigued by her consistent and enthusiastic decision to choose this slow moving, puppet loving, cardigan donning old guy over the brightly colored, fast paced, action packed cartoons of today. Mister Rogers trumps Dora? Of course I love it. Her preference for this 40 year old classic is one of the few things I can share with her from my own childhood. Pretty impressive that there is any show for "kids these days" that still has relevancy and appeal after four decades.
But I imagine what draws my daughter, me, and millions of others to the Neighborhood is less about the show and more about the message. I remember how I felt watching Mister Rogers’Neighborhood. I felt more secure and sure of myself - that I mattered, was acceptable, and accepted. I was likeable just the way I was. Pretty warm and fuzzy and maybe a little schmaltzy. (Insert group hug here.) But as "big kids these days" we can all use a little reminder.
So today, take one minute and twenty five seconds and be reminded. Click the YouTube link below and hear from Mister Rogers himself. As this old clip reminds us, "... I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger: I like you just the way you are."
