Happy New Year to all!
With the New Year comes new promises and unfortunately new life for the diet industry. Recently a Special K commercial featured people weighing themselves publicly in Times Square. Instead of a number reading, participants were shown words like "Joy, Courage and Strength." The tagline..."What will you gain when you lose?"
I ask instead, what will you gain if you begin a new life free of your eating disorder? Though it promises joy, courage and strength, weight loss simply will not deliver. Recovery veterans will be eagerly inform you that true joy comes from within. Authentic strength is gained when you fight your eating disorder on a daily basis and Courage allows you to take that first step toward recovery and persevere when times get tough.
A number on the scale will never bring true happiness. Happiness is peace of mind knowing that outer appearance doesn't (and will never) determine your worth. This year, strive to gain wisdom, purpose and meaning in your life. Gain joy and peace. Gain a life free of your eating disorder.
