Hello All,

I've just received this request for your thoughts about eating disorders memoirs, for a doctoral study.
Please read this request and, if you are so moved, follow the link to Jodie's study!

I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Cambridge conducting research on people's experiences of reading eating disorder memoirs. Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case, recruiting participants has been difficult. As a personal fan of "Gaining" and your newsletter, I thought I would email you to ask for your help. I wondered if it would be at all possible for you to include a line or two about the study in your newsletter, or on one of your blogs. The study is approved by the University of Cambridge Ethics Committee, and involves a short (15-20) minute online survey. Participants are also invited (at the end of the survey) to participate in a interview to share their experiences in more detail. I have included the link below so that you can view the study.

Wake up America to the crisis in coverage for EDs

Finally! The mainstream media is covering the chasm between medical insurance and the true cost of eating disorders treatment.  What this story does not address is the crisis that faces the millions of people with eating disorders who have no insurance or insurance that will not recognize eating disorders as an illness.

I'm observing this day of service and my own recovery from eating disorders by giving blood at my local hospital.  For years I could not give blood because I did not meet the weight threshold.  My anorexia deprived me of the ability to give this vital gift to others.  Since I have started giving blood, I am struck by the ease and gratitude I feel in sharing this life-giving substance with those in desperate need.  The simple process costs me nothing but a bit of time, and as I look around the donation center at other donors, I am reminded just how precious our lives are, how much we depend on each other, and the true value of health.

New Harvard BED study in progress

Harvard researchers are seeking participants for a study of a new noninvasive treatment for Binge Eating Disorder. I have no special knowledge or connection to this study, but it sounds interesting.

Here is a brief overview of the posting:

"People with binge eating disorder (BED) between 18-50 years old are needed for a research study in the area of Boston, MA. In this study we are testing whether enhancing brain activity using noninvasive brain stimulation can improve core symptoms of BED and examine the mechanisms involved. We use repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a technique that allows modulation of brain activity in a safe and noninvasive way."
